Ottawa Ice Allocations - Update
CARHA Hockey is pleased to announce that in working with the City of Ottawa Recreation Department, a favorable recommendation regarding future ice allocations for existing adult rec and oldtimer hockey ice users will be put forth.
The City of Ottawa has recently completed their collection and analysis of public feedback and is currently finalizing their findings review for City Council. Through its collaboration with CARHA Hockey, the Rec Department has decided to move forward with recommending a clause that will provide existing ice users from the adult rec/oldtimer hockey segment that are in good financial standing with the City to be grandfathered from any changes made to the current Ice Allocations Policy. As a result, these groups should not experience any negative affect from the new proposed Ice Allocation Policy. It is anticipated that such recommendation will be put forward to City Council in mid-November 2009.
On behalf of CARHA Hockey and the adult recreational and oldtimer hockey groups across the City, we thank the City of Ottawa for their open process and support.
Please share this information with your teammates and should you have any questions, please let us know.
Kind regards,

Go Leafs Go !!
A: They both look good until they hit the ice.
What's the difference between the Toronto Maple Leafs and a cigarette vending machine ?
A: The vending machine has Players.
What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and whales have in common?
A: They both get totally confused when surrounded by ice.
Why are the Toronto Maple Leafs like Canada Post ?
A: They both wear uniforms and don't deliver.
Why doesn't Hamilton have an NHL team ?
A: Because then Toronto would want one .....
What do the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Argonauts and the Toronto Blue Jays all have in common besides being based in Toronto ?
A: None of them can play hockey.
What do you call 30 millionaires around a TV watching the Stanley cup playoffs ?
A: The Toronto Maple Leafs.
What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and Billy Graham have in common ?
A: They both can make 20,000 people stand up and yell "Jesus Christ".
How do you keep the Toronto Maple Leafs out of your yard ?
A: Put up a goalie net.
What do you call a Toronto Maple Leaf with a Stanley cup ring ?
A: A thief.
What do the Toronto Maple Leafs and possums have in common ?
A: Both play dead at home and get killed on the road.
How many Toronto Maple Leafs does it take to win a Stanley cup ?
A: Nobody knows ... And we may never find out.
This guy says to the bartender, "can my dog and I watch the Toronto maple leafs hockey game here ? My cable is out, and my dog and I always watch the game together."
The bartender replies, "normally, dogs wouldn't be allowed in my bar, but its not very busy right now, so you and the dog can have a seat at the end of the bar. But, if there's any trouble with you or the dog, I'll have to ask you to leave."
The guy agrees, and he and his dog start watching the game. Pretty soon the leafs manage to score a goal and the excited dog jumps up on the bar, barks loudly, does a back flip and runs over to the bartender and gives him a high five.
The bartender says, "wow, that's pretty cool ! What does he do when they win a game ?
The guy answers, "No idea, I've only had him for 3 years."
The last time the maple leafs won the Stanley cup most of their fans were in diapers.
Coincidentally, the next time they win it, those same fans will be back in diapers again !

Spare List
FYI
9 full time players played "double headers" (both games 12 and 1) on 8 or more occasions during last year. This means they spared 8 plus times during the year. One player spared 9 times during the half season that he signed up for and another player spared 16 times in a full schedule.
Is there an issue here!!
Do you think there should be a limit on the number of games someone can spare???

CARHA Hockey Promotes Health and Safety
Do you want to get Fit For Hockey?
Fit For Hockey is a hockey conditioning program which combines both on-ice hockey skills training with off-ice education regarding proper physical training, health and body awareness, and nutrition.
Playing a rigorous sport such as hockey increases the chances of on-ice heart related incidents, so the Fit For Hockey program also gives players the opportunity to be trained in life saving skills such as CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Be proactive, not reactive...bring Fit For Hockey to your community.
Contact us to get your hockey community fit for hockey
Why Fit For Hockey
* Hockey is a rigorous, fast-paced, start and stop sport with strong reliance on the heart
* On-ice heart related incidents such as heart attacks have been increasing in the adult/oldtimers hockey demographic
* Lack of awareness, knowledge, and education regarding proper fitness conditioning, training, and lifestyle behaviours
* Limited exposure to CPR and AED
* When an on-ice heart related incident occurs hockey participants have not been equipped with the necessary knowledge and training to act to sustain lives
* Large percentage of adult/oldtimer hockey players are not active outside of hockey
* Fear stimulus exists for administering an electric shock without having experience using an AED
Fit For Hockey Program Elements
On-ice session include:
* Proper stretching techniques / hockey stretches / warm-ups
* Progression drills to improve on-ice fitness
* Improved skating stride and efficiency
* Heart rate monitoring and testing while performing rigorous activity
* Recognizing signs of fatigue, distress and the importance of re-hydration
* Smart hockey nutrition – pre and post game
Off-ice sessions include:
* The importance of getting a physical exam and of life style adjustments
* Developing the individual and team emergency action plans
* Off-ice training: aerobic, anaerobic, strength training
* CPR / AED Defibrillator training
* Body composition test

Safety - Facial Protection
Facial Protection
CARHA Hockey promotes safety in hockey and as such encourages all players to wear the proper facial protection while on the ice.
That being said, we are pleased to announce that we have enhanced our Hockey Insurance to reflect greater coverage for dental claims.
* Dental claims for players wearing full facial protection = $2,000 max.
* Dental claims for players wearing a half visor and mouthguard = $1,500 max.
In addition, CARHA Hockey actively engages in educating hockey players on the importance of wearing facial protection and mouth guards. Such endeavours include Mouth Guard Clinics at tournaments, Facial Protection Surveys and awareness campaigns via local media outlets and hockey retailers. Contact CARHA Hockey for more information.

Message From Craig M. - Black Team Captain
Here's the lowdown on new season.
First games will be Sep 5 same time slots.
Season will consist of 28 games over 30 weeks
Cost will be $375 - this includes insurance.
Spare fee up to $7 for league members, $15 for non.
To ease collection of spare monies: if spare fee not collected before game you don't play.
If one team has been stacked due to better spares - team captains will even teams up by switching up a few players (spare moved first).
AND the SHOCKER
We are reorganizing the teams with a blind lottery (ie. picking names out of hats - there will be a few hats by skill level).
After lottery team captains will make sure teams look even, if not some adjustments may be made.
So odds are 25% you'll be back on black.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
Let me know if you intend on playing this season
Let me know if you have been ride sharing with someone - meaning you really HAVE to be on the same team.
Any other comments (positive please)
Craig
ps Brian M : I know you are not back but will keep you informed for whenever you return
Andre : would you mind talking to our goalie to see if he can play - cost for him would be $100

Message From Brian L. - Red Team Captain to the League Committee Members
OK< I'm looking at the responses from my players which I told you would happen and I have to support them. As this will probably be our last year for the league, and I base this on converstions at the Prescott tonight with players from the Sunday Afternoon League who play at Tom Brown on Sundays and work for the City. ie: Steve S.; Graig M. etc. They told me our Leagues will be gone next year as the City is giving all the prime times to minor hockey. This League has also been in operation for a long time.
So, my suggestion is to try and balance the Yellow Team with some good players who will show up, run the add as discussed for outside players and maybe a mix from within when we see what level of player apply and finish on a "HAPPY NOTE AND A PARTY March 31 to celebrate a Great League coming to an end.
Based on conversations at the year end party last year I know the White does not want this, the Black and Red do not want it so lets put the idea away and take another route. I'm open for suggestions but upon thinking further on our "draft" this format will not work as one team could end up with all forwards, no defence or vice versa. Not a whole lot of thought was put into this, the only way to go would have been a full draft.
So I'm looking at it from realty, this is the last year so let end with on a Happy Note and celebrate March 31 to our League.
I'm away for the next two weeks so I'll check my e-mails when I return. No final decision on how we will proceed will be made without my vote or approval by Committee Members.

Message From Tom T. - Gold Team Captain
Hope everyone is enjoying the summer despite the weather. Saturday hockey will begin on September 5th and the cost will be about $375 per player for 28 games.
At a meeting of the Captains last night the subject of breaking up the teams and starting with new rosters was seriously discussed and I think there will be some form of lottery reorganization take place. Nothing firm has been set at this point. The purpose of this message is to gauge your interest in returning whether or not you are placed on another team.
Please let me know as soon as possible.
Regards,
Tom
Message From Larry M. - White Team Captain
The Prescott hockey committee meet on Tues. July 28th to go over the up-coming years fees and other material.
The first think I need to know is if you are coming back to play an other year in the league, need your answer by the middle of August so in the event you are not able to join us we can get a replacement before the year starts {hope you are all in for an other year}
The fee for this year is $375.00 , the fee includes the same insurance package we got last year,{Goalie's get a special rate, I just forget what it is at this time}
Start Date is Sept. 5-2009 ending March 27-2010 Total of 30 weeks
But , we do not play on the Sat Dec. 26 - 2009
Or Feb 13 - 2010 This brings or total games played down to 28
This year the committee has decided to have a lottery to re adjust the teams, this means that all the players returning will be rated A B C or D and their names will go into a hat, the team captains will pick from the hat until the teams are established. It becomes the luck of the draw if I am able to play with any of you this year, but we can still drink at the Prescott after the games.
I hope that you will all view this in a positive manner and that I get to see you on and of the ice
Yours
Larry M.

Letter to City of Ottawa - Laila Gibbons
Re: Ice Booking Policy
Dear Laila,
I’m writing to follow up on your interest in changing the City of
The group has a number of important considerations that we wished to share with you:
We did read on the City of
The two pieces of legislation cited on your page both prohibit age based discrimination: Ontario Human Rights Code prohibits discrimination on the basis of age and the Canadian Human Rights Act states that it is against the law to discriminate on the basis of age. The new policy is designed to discriminate based on age. That is the new policy has been designed to distribute ice time from long term ice lease holders who are in our age group and ensure youth will get premium ice times.
I can appreciate that the city needs to ensure that youth in our community have a an opportunity to recreate at an opportune time, but I also believe that the City of Ottawa is well served by encouraging adults to exercise and that Canada as a nation has encouraged people of all ages to maintain their fitness for health reasons and to focus on the fitness of youth at the expense of adults is an unfair and counter productive policy.
The City Council probably looks at how sport can best contribute to a diverse City and this merits a sustained effort that will benefit from on-going engagement between the City and leaders in the sport sector. There are many ways that our league presently contributes to diversity which your new policy will undermine. Our league is multi-racial and multi-ethnic. We have a mix of age groups and career accomplishments. I am a Métis person and we have had numerous Aboriginal people play in our league as full time players and as spares and we have always felt welcomed. In fact, when I was managing an Aboriginal training program for urban Aboriginal youth, I was able to secure placements for these students through the “Prescott Network” But mine is not the only minority group that plays in this league, as we have number of visible minority players that enjoy the atmosphere and camaraderie that our league provides. Our league, like the community it serves, is a melting pot and that is one of its great attractions. In fact, two of the key annual events that are tied to our league, an Italian lunch at the end for all teams, and a Chinese food supper provided by one of our team captains are greatly appreciated by all the players for their cultural qualities.
While policy progress on the advancement of youth involvement in sport in Ottawa is important as many of us are also parents, the city needs to ensure that advance is not made at the cost of “Diversity in Sport,” From our perspective, and our league has fifty members in the Ottawa region who are voters, it is very important that the City treats our group’s valued recreational and social opportunity in a fair and non discriminatory fashion. We have written this letter to ensure that our City of
Before you change your policies’ on ice booking, we strongly encourage you to reach out beyond only parents of children in the
As a group, we look forward to taking the next steps in this process, to increasing our understanding about diversity and sport, and to initiating a productive dialogue on Prescott Hockey League’s contribution to a diverse city and citizenry. Re-distribution of Adult Prime Hours
Letters have be written on behalf of the Prescott Hockey League to express our concerns and have been forwarded to our Members on City Council.

Below is a copy of the letter sent it emphasizes the importance of these times being used by us as the City is definitely looking at giving prime time hours to Minor Hockey. There is a good chance we could lose our contract after next year.
As a league member please write the city and call their Councillor to express their concerns.
We need to act immediately on this as a vote will take with the appropriate Committees on May 27th.
May 21, 2007
Attention: Laila Gibbons
Subject: Redistribution of Adult Prime hours to Minor Sport Associations
As current holder of the contract for a weekly two hour Saturday time slot at McNabb Arena, I wish to express my opinion on the above subject.
This contract has been in existence under the name of the Prescott Hockey League and the current holder, Brian L. since the mid sixties at the McNabb Arena. We are a non-funded, non-profit group which provides pick-up hockey to 44 members ranging in age from 35 to 65. We administer our own Insurance through C.A.R.H.A. injury waiver which all players must sign in order to play which removes any possible future burden to be placed on the City.
As this is a recreational hockey pick-up league many of these men do not have the skill or are too old to play in leagues so this is their only outlet for hockey. It also exists as a social tool for people to meet, share information, have lunch etc. which may help them with their needs through life.
I believe that the Minor Hockey Associations already have enough of the prime hours for hockey and that you will see fit to allow our long standing contract to continue existing in this time slot. Through the years we have enjoyed friendships made with the City of Ottawa employees whom worked the Facility and their commitment to excellence which has been exceptional to our needs.
Again, we hope to continue our current status at the McNabb Arena and look forward to hearing from you.
Please forward this letter through the proper channels for consideration.
Brian L.
