CARHA Hockey Promotes Health and Safety

Health - Fit for Hockey

Do you want to get Fit For Hockey?

Fit For Hockey is a hockey conditioning program which combines both on-ice hockey skills training with off-ice education regarding proper physical training, health and body awareness, and nutrition.

Playing a rigorous sport such as hockey increases the chances of on-ice heart related incidents, so the Fit For Hockey program also gives players the opportunity to be trained in life saving skills such as CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Be proactive, not reactive...bring Fit For Hockey to your community.

Why Fit For Hockey

* Hockey is a rigorous, fast-paced, start and stop sport with strong reliance on the heart
* On-ice heart related incidents such as heart attacks have been increasing in the adult/oldtimers hockey demographic
* Lack of awareness, knowledge, and education regarding proper fitness conditioning, training, and lifestyle behaviours
* Limited exposure to CPR and AED
* When an on-ice heart related incident occurs hockey participants have not been equipped with the necessary knowledge and training to act to sustain lives
* Large percentage of adult/oldtimer hockey players are not active outside of hockey
* Fear stimulus exists for administering an electric shock without having experience using an AED

Fit For Hockey Program Elements

On-ice session include:

* Proper stretching techniques / hockey stretches / warm-ups
* Progression drills to improve on-ice fitness
* Improved skating stride and efficiency
* Heart rate monitoring and testing while performing rigorous activity
* Recognizing signs of fatigue, distress and the importance of re-hydration
* Smart hockey nutrition – pre and post game

Off-ice sessions include:

* The importance of getting a physical exam and of life style adjustments
* Developing the individual and team emergency action plans
* Off-ice training: aerobic, anaerobic, strength training
* CPR / AED Defibrillator training
* Body composition test

Safety - Facial Protection

Facial Protection

CARHA Hockey promotes safety in hockey and as such encourages all players to wear the proper facial protection while on the ice.

That being said, we are pleased to announce that we have enhanced our Hockey Insurance to reflect greater coverage for dental claims.

* Dental claims for players wearing full facial protection = $2,000 max.
* Dental claims for players wearing a half visor and mouthguard = $1,500 max.

In addition, CARHA Hockey actively engages in educating hockey players on the importance of wearing facial protection and mouth guards. Such endeavours include Mouth Guard Clinics at tournaments, Facial Protection Surveys and awareness campaigns via local media outlets and hockey retailers.
