Alymer Hockey Tournament: Jan., 28, 2009 – Feb., 1, 2009

We are looking for teams for our annual Alymer hockey tournament. The tournament commences on the night of Wednesday, Jan., 28, 2009 and ends on Sunday, Feb,.1, 2009.

Although we have not finalized the tournament, we are thinking of having:

30 plus: 12 teams, 40 plus: 12 teams, 50 plus: 4 teams. Accordingly, we are presently looking for teams mainly for both 30 plus and 40 plus.

We will be entering several teams from Alymer and these will be house league calibre teams which include a couple of A players, four or five B players and a couple of C players. Accordingly, our preference is to have similar calibre teams enter the tournament.

The format that we are looking at will guarantee each team 4 games with a 50% possibility of having a 5th game. For both the 30 plus and 40 plus, we want to have your first two games determine what division you are in and the last two games being played against teams in your division. I.e. If you win your first two games then you play on the weekend against other teams that won. We are leaning towards this format because in the past some have sent stacked teams to our tournament, which has left some folks upset.

In the 50 plus, we may only have four teams, in which case the teams will not be divided into divisions. Note: If more 50 plus teams want in, and we do not get enough of the other divisions then we will alter the format accordingly.

Beer will be served in the dressing room and various other locations in the two Alymer arenas (note unlike Ontario, in Quebec the whole arena is licensed hence you can sit in the stands or your dressing room and enjoy a cold one.). Furthermore a bar will open with food for much of the tournament.

If you are interested in entering a team please contact one of the following:

Kent Mayhew: email kent.mayhew@rogers.com

John Mitchell: email: jjm@magma.ca

Larry: email: jr.jue@videotron.ca

Also let us know if there is a particular night or time slot, which your team cannot play. We will do our best to accommodate.

We will notify you prior to Christmas whether or not we can accommodate your team. At which time we will expect a $100 deposit to be given to the Alymer hockey league.

Although we have not finalized costs, we expect to be charging around $500 per team for a guaranteed 4 games with a 50% possibility of a 5th.

Sincerely Kent Mayhew

Christmas Notes

Gents, we will be having a get together at the Prescott Hotel after the second game on December 20th. Limited beer and pizza will be put on the table.

Secondly, there are two weeks left to pay the balance of your league fees.

Cheers and have a great Holiday Season

New Rogers Cable Offer

I signed up, shouldn't you?

8 guys you need for a successful beer-league team...

It's a well-known fact that there are only two seasons in Canada: summer and hockey. According to long-standing tradition, the former starts with the hoisting of the Stanley Cup, as fans in an American city celebrate. The latter officially kicks off after Labour Day weekend.

In fact, there are hundreds, possibly thousands, of managers across Canada who will spend the long weekend making personnel decisions in time for the September dawn of a new season. Granted, the majority of these managers are in charge of teams with names like 'Old Puckers', 'Rusty Blades', 'Just the Tips' and 'Nine-Inch Males,' but don't be fooled; beer-league hockey squads can be downright tricky to put together. As with any successful organization, you need the right mix, and that means drafting from the following beer-league player
categories:

Which one are you???

The Ringer

Some teams wait until the playoffs to unveil this option. Others go with it right from the opening face-off. Either way, without a ringer, your team is done. The challenge for managers is convincing a good player to suit up for a bad side. This can be accomplished a number of ways, including promises of goal-scoring glory and awe-inspired teammates. Most effective, however, is let him play for free. It's simple math, really. Everyone else pays an extra $50 and everyone else gets a shot at the 'DD' Division title.

The Young Guy

At first glance, he can easily be mistaken for a ringer, since the young guy still wears the shorts and socks of his junior or college team. But it's time for the next phase of life now, and that means an office job. The young guy stays in shape for the first half of the year. Sadly, an increasingly sedentary existence and late night partying catches up to him by Christmas. 15 to 20 pounds later, he's just another player, huffing and puffing with the rest. Welcome aboard, kid.

The Old Guy

Forget the 50-and-over league; that's not for him...even though his gloves reach up to his armpits, and he still uses a wood stick. To be fair, the old guy can be an effective player, especially if he's a wily old guy -- a hook here and a chop there, because that's how they did it when professional athletes were real men. 'Eddie Shore -- now there was a hockey player! Lost an ear against the Maroons. Sewed it back on himself. Never missed a shift.'

The Tardy Goalie

Hey, thanks for showing up. Only five minutes gone in the first. Not like you play a crucial position or anything. Take your time, dickhead.

The Beginner

Required only for cheap laughs. On the one hand, you have to admire the beginner. It takes a lot of courage to buy all brand new equipment, and take up hockey in your 40's. On the other hand, learn to take a pass, man. It's right on your stick, for Christ's sake. How does that knock you over? And now you're friggin offside! Not to mention the Beginner shows up at every game, no matter what time or what day. Sunday night playoff game at 11PM - no worries, Mr Beginner will be there.

The Complete Psycho

Also good for a few giggles . . . from afar. Most likely a cop or fireman. The complete psycho is capable of anything: running the goalie, challenging an entire bench, a tomahawk chop -- all in the repertoire. Do not feed the complete psycho. He doesn't want to be fed. He wants to hunt. And, look to him to carry on his act in the bar after the game.

The Naked Guy

Bane of the dressing room. Most players have the courtesy to stretch their hamstrings while sporting, at the very least, a bit of underwear. Not the naked guy. He'll carry on full conversations, and you had better maintain eye contact like your life depended on it....or come face to face with the swinging sausage.

The Guy with the New Girlfriend

An excellent way to lower everyone else's fees is to load up on a few of these. The guy with the new girlfriend will show up to three games, tops, so his payment will contribute to everyone else's and it's not like you'll lose ice time by putting him on the roster. That said, beware that the guy with the new girlfriend might very well turn into the guy with the new wife...at which point he'll never miss another game.

So your having a bad day !!!

This little animal is called the Naked Mole-Rat and is from North Africa .

So if you are having a bad day and feeling sorry for yourself, remember:

You could look like a dick with buck teeth.

Cost due ASAP
$360 per skater (1/2 due by week two and balance before Christmas)
$100 per goalie (non-refundable - up from last year)

Spare money for those in the league will be $5 and those outside of the league $12 and payable to the captain they are sparing for. Should that captain be absence please make alternate arrangements with a league executive.

NOTE: Last year there were several instances where spares did not see it necessary to pay. This lack of accountability will be shared and dealt with accordingly.

News and Notes from the PHL

The early August annual call to arms!!

• Are you in? Will you be returning? Please send your replies to prescotthockey (at) gmail (dot) com .

• League Executive
There is a new sheriff in town. Brian L. has taken over as president with the three remaining captains Tom T. , Brian S. , Larry M. as his assistants and Mark T. as Secretary/Treasurer.

• Advertisements in the Sun and the Citizen
It’s that time of year when we place an ad in the Sun and Citizen looking for players. Over the past several years this has brought in several newbie’s to our dressing rooms.

• Team Composition
Nothing has been finalized in this area. League Executive continue to monitor and changes may be forthcoming.

• The Blog and Google Groups
Here again the league will be using these two vehicles to distribute information. Google Groups gives users the capability to discuss topics online. As for the Blog – it's the best source of info and if you'd like something posted please let us know.

• Opening Day September 6th
League ends March 28th and the cost may change slightly but is earmarked at $360 per skater. Times remain 12 & 1 and a schedule will be posted in a few weeks.

Remember - Please send us an email indicating if you're returning or not.

Thanks

Spares and Sparing

It's become apparent that a few of you believe it's your right to spare. Let's correct that now before we go further.

You're Wrong!!

When you joined this league, you joined to participate one hour each week from September to the end of March.

The "invitation" to participate in a second game was left up to the respective captains (or a deligate) to insure that the spares would not improve their teams overall calibre. ie: an "A" player shouldn't replace a "B" player although a "B" player can replace an "A" player. In addition a "D" player should replace a "C" or "D" player.

The numbers game also continues to be used to a teams advantage. Where a "C" or "D" player is not added in the fear that that would weaken the overall team calibre. Here once again please be respectful and use a league first attitude.

If any of this isn't clear please talk to your captain.

REMINDER - There are some of you that have spared but have forgot to pay before you play. If this happens again, captains will be notified and "invitations" will not be forthcoming.

NOTE: Eight players have yet to complete payment of moneys owing the league. Unbelievably some are repeat offenders. All I can say is wait for the leagues email next fall.

Happy New Year

As we enter into the second half of our schedule I'd like to remind all of you that we have made great strides to improve the league. Each year we make progress and 2007 was better than 06 and it's hoped that 08 will be better still. The caliber of play isn't important, it's that players respect each other and there individual abilities. From time to time players may feel that they are being overlooked or under appreciated and this is far from the truth. If at any time you perceive that something isn't going your way take a moment and think what can I do to help make things better and make it more enjoyable for the other 43 guys. Each and everyone of you has an important part to play in this league and you should keep this in mind. Keep asking yourself - What can I do to help?

Here's to a "Great O 8"

Referees

Although we have become acustomed to playing the game without "Zebras" you are reminded that this does not give license to infactions without penalty. This also goes for slapshots which are not to be used in our league. Reminder here it's to the knee both ways, on take back and follow through.

Stop or you'll be asked to leave!!!
