Please be advised that the lottery issue has not been closed and will be in place for the 08/09 season.

Win at all costs
It appears that some players are focused on winning at all costs. This league is not about winning - its all about playing with respect.
STOP and Remember
Play fair - Play safe - Respect others

City Of Ottawa Budget
Although the budget hasn't been approved and released I would like to point out that there is a proposed $45 hourly increase to ice time rental cost. Not a 100% increase that was the rumour this past weekend.
Yes this will increase your player fees for next year.

Christmas Get Together
There are no official league wide plans to get together at "The Prescott" but the usual suspects will most likely be there, please join them. Room 6 is always open for your $2 donation, don't be shy.

Lottery Revisited
Once again the team parity and ongoing dislike for certain players "on the other team" has raised the discussion on the lottery. What we need to know is the position of each of the players on the issue.
The lottery is simply done by placing names into various catergories (based on level of play) and teams are formed by the drawing of names from those catergories.
So over the next two weeks either let the league know in person or place your vote on piece of paper and hand it in.
Your vote can either be yes or no or abstain to the lottery.
Please vote!!! Don't be an apathetic Canadian.
"Most human beings have an infinite capacity for taking things for granted. "
Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) British author.
"If moderation is a fault, then indifference is a crime."
Georg C. Lichtenberg (1742-1799) German scientist, satirist and anglophile.
"I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn."
Dorothy Parker (1893-1967) U.S. short-story writer and poet.

Next Installment
If you haven't already paid up in full, the final portion of the league fees is due over the next five weeks, before Christmas. Please make every effort to have this done without delay. We don't need to lose anyone else for non-payment.
Thank you
Thank you
Teams Add Up or Do They !!!
The teams have been adjusted so now there are 10 skaters on each team. Those players moving teams have been notified by their former captains.
Averaging 9
Over the past several weeks we have been averaging 9 players missing each weekend. That makes it difficult to balance the league when one team is missing!!! Captains please let me know who the players are that are not communicating their abscences and or have missed several weeks and the league will look at having them replaced for the second half of the year.

To My Dear Wife
"To My Dear Wife. You will surely understand that I have certain needs that you, being 54 years old, can no longer satisfy. I am very happy with you and I value you as a good wife. Therefore, after reading this letter, I hope that you will not wrongly interpret the fact that I will be spending the evening with my 18 year old secretary at the Comfort Inn Hotel. Please don't be upset. I shall be home before midnight."
When the man came home late that night, he found the following letter on the dining room table:
"My Dear Husband, I received your letter and thank you for your honesty about my being 54 years old. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that you are also 54 years old. As you know, I am a math teacher at our local college. I would like to inform you that while you read this, I will be at the Hotel Fiesta with Michael, one of my students, who is also the assistant tennis coach. He is young, virile, and like your secretary, is 18 years old. As a successful businessman who has an excellent knowledge of Math, you will understand that we are in the same situation, although with one small difference........18 goes into 54 a lot more times than 54 goes into 18. Therefore, I will not be home until sometime tomorrow."

PHL - Player Rating System
A player rating system has been established for all skaters. The forty skaters are placed in order from the most complete player downward. The top ten are placed in group A then the next ten in group B and so on to group D. The groups are then ranked 1 to 10 top to bottom.
Two scoring methods can be used:
The "Ranking Method"
This system has the top player receiving 40 points an the last in group A receiving 31 points, with the last in group D receiving 1 point.
The "Grouping Method"
This system has those in group A receiving 20 points, Group B 15 points and Group C 10 points and Group D 5 points.
The objective here is to evaluate and compare the teams based on the on ice product.
Keeping in mind that the number of players per team used in the assessment is:
Black = 8 skaters
White = 11 skater
Red = 11 skaters
Yellow = 10 skaters
Note: The captains have yet to come to a consensus as to what moves can be made to establish 10 skaters per team, once done the numbers will be re-posted.
Using the "Ranking Method" ie 40 .......1 pts.
Black = 164
White = 235
Red = 197
Yellow = 224
Using the "Grouping Method" ie A = 20 pts, B = 15, C = 10, D = 5
Black = 100
White = 145
Red = 115
Yellow = 140
Although neither of these is a true indication of how many games will be close from week to week the objective here is to make the teams as equal as possible. It is hoped that upcoming player moves made by the captains will reflect numbers that are closer and a little more balanced.
Thanks for your time!!

Bird Day (Weekend)
It's upon us, the weekend when we are usually short players due to Thanksgiving. So for those that would like to be part of the double header please make yourself available.
Please note there are no guarantees but with the amount of MIA's (missing in action) rising there is a likelihood you'll play.
Thanks

The Red Head
A man is dining in a fancy restaurant and there is a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He has been checking her out since he sat down, but lacks the nerve to talk with her.
Suddenly she sneezes, and her glass eye comes flying out of its socket toward the man.
He reflexively reaches out, grabs it out of the air, and hands it back.
"Oh my, I am so sorry," the woman says as she pops her eye back in place.
"I'm sure that must have embarrassed you so let me pay for your dinner to make it up to you," she says. They enjoy a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they go to the theater followed by drinks.They talk, they laugh, she shares her deepest dreams and he listens, he shares his and she listens.
After paying for everything, she asks him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast.
They have a wonderful, wonderful time.
The next morning, she cooks a gourmet breakfast with all the trimmings. The guy is amazed and totally impressed. Everything had been so incredible!
"You know," he said, "you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet? "
"No," she replies. . . .

PHL Lottery
Team Captains have concluded that the Lottery will be delayed. Captains will endeavour to make each game "close" by replacing missing players with spares of equal caliber. Failure of games to be "close" will result in the implementation of the "Lottery".

2. Tyrone pimps 3 whores. If the price is $40 a trick, how many tricks per day must each whore perform to support Tyrone's $500 a day crack habit?
3. Lo Ping wants to cut the kilo of cocaine he bought for $7000 to make 20% profit. How many grams of strychnine will he need?
4. Tony got 4 years for murder. He also received $350,000 for the hit. If his common law wife spends $33,100 per month, how much money will be left when he gets out? (Extra Credit Bonus: How much more time will Tony get for killing the bitch that spent his money?)

Married for one night
A man and a woman, who have never met before, but are both married to other people, found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train.Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, they were both very tired and fell asleep quickly...he in the upper bunk and she in the lower.
At 1:00 AM , the man leaned over and gently woke the woman saying,
"Ma'am, I'm sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach into the closet to get me a second blanket? I'm awfully cold."
"I have a better idea," she replied. "Just for tonight, let's pretend that we're married."
"Wow! That's a great idea!" he exclaimed.
"Good," she replied. "Get your own f*ckin blanket!" After a moment of silence, he farted.

Team Report - White
White, although being probably the oldest team of the four they sure do look good. Players not returning are Shawn D. Peter G. and Chris S. who suffered a knee injury late last November and may be ready to play around the same time this year. Gilbert B. has joined this team lowering the average age. Their goalie Chris alters the team average age only slightly.

$310 per skater ($320 if you pay in two installment - 1/2 due by week two and balance before Christmas)
$50 per goalie (new this year non-refundable)
There are a few of you that still owe moneys from last year, this must be paid before you step on the ice. Your captain will be in touch with you on this subject.
Thanks

Review Committee Recommendations
Below are the recommendations from the Review Committee established this spring.
First recommendation, strongly endorse not having three players return - names withheld.
Second recommendation, as due diligence, the Review Committee has identified a list of players with prior incidents (e.g., suspensions, serious incidents, ongoing incidents, etc.). The League will retain this list and the Review Committee suggests that the Disciplinary Committee take it into consideration in the event of new incidents. Note that these players would NOT BE TOLD-- the intention wasn't to serve notice or put them on warning; rather, it was to note certain players who have been suspended or who are on the verge of causing incidents and to keep this in mind if they face the Discipline Committee in the future. The Review Committee is not recommending they be expelled from the league and they will not be informed of their "noted" status.
Although not being asked to address rules a set of general "regulations" were addressed to be published on the blog. The intention was two-fold: a) to inform all players what will happen if they engage in certain kinds of conduct, and b) to help the Disciplinary Committee respond to incidents so that their "judgements" aren't seen as arbitrary. We also weighed in on the ever-present problem of attendance.
Fighting
Both players will be sent off the ice immediately and will be suspended upon review of the incident by the Disciplinary Committee. Suspensions will be mandatory, the length of which would be determined by the Committee. Repeat offenders may be kicked out of the league.
Serious On-Ice Incidents
Tempers flare and on-ice incidents are part of the game. However, following an on-ice incident that stops the play, should the players involved continue their altercation after the intervention of other players, they shall be sent off for the duration of that game. No further action is usually warranted. However, if the players are repeat offenders, the Disciplinary Committee will review the incident and determine whether further action is warranted.
Abuse
The league is supposed to be fun, and while competitiveness might lead to some type of “abuse” (such as trash-talking or as a result of tempers), excessive abuse—verbal or physical—will not be tolerated. The Disciplinary Committee will review incidents.
Lottery System
The Review Committee supports a move to a lottery system as previously outlined to establish teams. This could be repeated mid-way through the season.
Attendance
It is recognized that work schedules change, family lives are busy, and players take vacations. Obviously, players might not be able to make all the games, and sometimes advance warning is not possible. However, uneven attendance remains one of the biggest challenges. Not showing up for games is unfair to team-mates. Also, the optimal Saturday time slots, level of competitiveness and players make this league very attractive to guys looking to play.
Team captains are responsible to monitor and manage attendance of their teams. Captains should make a point of asking their players if they plan to be away for upcoming games and arrange with the league for spares. Players are to inform their captain and/or league of upcoming absences.
Players will not be punished for being away, but persistent absences without having informed the captain and/or the league in advance may lead to players being replaced by others wishing to get into the league as regulars.
The league will maintain a list of spares.
Goalies are responsible for arranging their own spares by first asking another league goalie to play for them.
NOTE: From the PHL - Thank you to the Review Committee for taking the time out of their schedules to convien and develope this document.

Healthy Heart Hockey Tips
Hockey is an intense, vigorous sport that can put more strain on your heart than other aerobic activities.
Did you know that several middle-aged men have died from heart attacks while playing hockey in Ottawa in recent years?
Do you?
.Play hockey once or twice a week
.Consider hockey as a way to stay in shape
.Stay on the ice for long shifts
.Huff and puff getting off the ice
.Still have a fast heart rate for your next shift
.Have high blood pressure
.Have high blood cholesterol and take medication to control it
.Take other medications for diseases of the heart and lungs, such as angina or asthma
.Live a lifestyle that could put you at higher risk for heart disease

News and Notes from the PHL
• Advertisements in the Sun and the Citizen
It’s that time of year when we place an ad in the Sun and Citizen looking for players. Over the past several years this has brought in several newbie’s to our dressing rooms. It’s already worked got two new guys lined up already.
• Captains Needed
It appears that we’ll need a captain or three. As the Black team was ‘captainless’ for most of last year and there is a little uncertainty on the Red and White. If you’re interested please let us know.
• Team Composition
It appears we may go the route of the Lottery. Here’s a proposal on how it will work. During the first three or four weeks all players will be graded into four or five categories. The team captains will blindly draw from the varying categories. Around Christmas or shortly there after the lottery will take place once again.
Remember the guy you hated to play with or against…. Guess what!!!!
• The Google Group and the Blog
Here again the league will be using these two vehicles to distribute information. Google Groups gives users the capability to discuss online any topic. As for the Blog – kindly keep yourself up to date.
• Are you in? Will you be returning? Please let us know so we don’t keep beating at your door.
• Although IT’S NOT WRITTEN IN STONE circle September 8th as this may be our start date.
Thanks

Blogmaker - Meets it Maker
It would appear the previous Blog using Blogmaker has failed a second time. Due to its unreliability the Prescott Hockey League blog using Blogger has been created. Please forward any text from the previous blog so it can be uploaded to it's new home.
