PHL 2020/2021 Season Canceled

With much regret and after several months effort of our executive we have decided to cancel the 2020/2021 season. After re-purposing McNabb for Covid-19, to relocate to any other location and time could not be achieved in the window of opportunity presented by City. As it turns out this may be for the best as there is a spike in case in the National Capital Region.

We look forward to your return next year.

Former PHL - One of the Originals

Al Hicks

https://kitchissippi.com/2018/04/27/hok-82-al-hicks/

Meet Al Hicks.
“I was born in Margate, England and came to Canada when I was three. We stayed in Montreal for a little bit and then moved to Ottawa. I grew up in the war time housing right across from Westgate Shopping Mall. I went to Fisher Park High School. I was in the graphic arts program, which I loved. I could draw with pen, pencil or ink and I’d draw all the advertisements. It was really hard to get a job that paid any money, so I turned my attention to cars.
“I worked at a variety of jobs and at a few different car washes. I also drove for Pepsi. My buddy worked for Coke and we would meet up and switch cases because I liked drinking Coke and he liked drinking Pepsi. After that, I started working for the City of Ottawa, cutting grass in the summer and working in the arenas in the winter. After that, I worked in the mailroom, delivering interdepartmental mail all over the city.
“I was a pretty good athlete, played a lot of hockey and I was an arm wrestler. One time I was even on the Wild World of Sports. We would travel all over to tournaments and I did pretty well. I also loved cars. Buying them, taking them apart, putting them back together, fixing them and then selling them for more than I bought them for. Cars were simpler then and you could take it apart and put it back together in the same day. My favourite car was the Dodge Fury with a 426 wedge. I used to go to the racetrack with her and she’d go about 120-130 mph. I’ve been married to Carol for 52 years; the secret to a long marriage is two good people.” Collected by Ellen Bond

Hockey Day in Mongolia

Just want to let you know that your hockey donations finally arrived in Mongolia last week. Yesterday the Canadian Ambassador and I had the opportunity to deliver the gear during a Saturday morning practice of youth hockey teams in Ulaanbaatar. As you will see in the photos, the equipment was very well received (despite the -25 degree temperature). The hand over was covered by local media and even led the evening sports broadcast.

Obviously, this would not have been possible without your kindness and generosity. I want to say a big thank you to all of you for that. You efforts helped make a group of kids very happy as well as raise Canada's standing in the local community.

Best,

Steve

Red Bull Crashed Ice a Success

Despite the frigid temperatures, LaFlamme says viewing areas at Major's Hill Park, York Street and on Wellington Street were at capacity throughout the night. Red Bull would not discuss numbers, but Ottawa Police say that at any given time about 15,000 people packed into the area around the Ottawa Locks to watch the sporting event.
On Monday, Ottawa 2017 clarified that further to say nearly 50,000 people attended the finals on Saturday evening. All viewing areas hit capacity Saturday, including the locks with a capacity of roughly 20,000 people, the Wellington overflow area at 12,100, Major's Hill Park at 10,000 and the York Street Activation Site at 5,600.
"RCMP geospatial measuring pegs the crowd at 28,000 in one snapshot from Saturday evening (8pm) for the bowl and Wellington area. That does not‎ account for the very large flow-through crowd due to the cold, which would put overall attendance much higher, as attendance turned over approximately 2 times, a significant increase over the 28,000 number that was shared," wrote Denise LeBlanc with Ottawa 2017 in a media release issued Monday.

REC League Hockey With A Difference

By Martin Cleary

Imagine a men’s recreation hockey league where players wear either black or white sweaters with no numbers, individual stats aren’t recorded, there’s no playoffs and captains can make trades on the fly to improve league parity.

Imagine the players and the referee dressing in the same room. Imagine eight sides of six players each, merged into four teams to play two games each week; teammates one week, opponents the next.
Imagine the referee calling a minor penalty and, instead of having the player sit for two minutes, he awards a goal to the other team. Avoid a contact penalty because that will cost you two goals.

John MacBeth doesn’t have to imagine because he has revolutionized his small slice of the hockey world, creating and sponsoring a men’s recreational league with all of those elements. His idea was simple: pure hockey, plenty of speed, and players respecting players in a spirited contest.

Statistics, rough play, suspensions and politics have been ejected from his game.

Three years ago, MacBeth, president/CEO of Mobileyes Solutions Inc., was reviewing his recreational hockey season with his friends and they weren’t happy about it. That’s when MacBeth, who also was tossed out of the Glen Cairn Men’s Hockey League in 2013 for his edgy play, decided to start from scratch.

“We can change the environment and create a new design like in business,” MacBeth said. “Why not turn it (hockey) upside down. No sacred cows. How can we create a safe environment (and have) mutual respect in a game as fast as hockey?”

The eight-team, 48-player Mobileyes Solutions Invitational Hockey League completed its first 30-game winter schedule in March to rave reviews. Nobody cared about the final standings or the fact there were no playoffs. There wasn’t a single player ejection, suspension or appeal.

Each of the eight teams had six players, including a captain, and they played once a week. The league scheduler paired one team with a different team each week to make four teams for two games.

It’s competitive hockey without the rough stuff, off-ice grumbling and hearings. It’s hockey in an oval of friendship.

“It eliminates the tribalism which is indoctrinated in men’s league hockey — us versus them,” says MacBeth, who held the season-ending meeting with the four goalies, eight captains and two referees to review the year. “It’s us versus us. The real accomplishment is getting it (that philosophy) in your head.

“The president is a facilitator. I’m responsible for discipline, but I have nothing to do. We had the odd slash or hook (penalties), but nothing beyond. What I’m so proud of is, it’s fast, hard competition. Every night we play versus our buddies. We want to beat them in the spirit of competitiveness, but not hurt them.”

Here’s the league’s season-ending Facebook posting on April 1: “Well, that’s a wrap. Great season — congratulations to whichever team won the championship.”

No fooling.

Xmas Party

The league's Xmas pizza get together is on Dec. 21st at the Prescott Hotel after the second game. The league will supply the pizza. The balance of the "pops" and food will be the responsibility of the individuals.

On another note the player fees and due this weekend, please make sure you are paid in full before you leave the rink this Saturday.

Cheers

Suspension Reporting - CARHA

Why CARHA needs suspensions to be reported:

It is important that CARHA Hockey is aware of all suspensions within their network in order to ensure that all participants are eligible to participate in CARHA Hockey games. The main reasons relate to continuity of information, restricting liability and finally as a support mechanism to the leagues.
The large quantity of adult recreational hockey opportunities presents the possibility for an ineligible player in one league to choose a different league to participate.  It may occur that communication between the leagues does not occur and as such a league may unwittingly allow a player to register and participate while he is ineligible by CARHA Hockey.
CARHA Hockey does not want to be exposed to any possible liability in the event that subsequent actions result from an ineligible player participating while he/she is deemed as suspended.  It is to restore a level of accountability for the respective league issuing the suspension. Suspensions imposed by leagues are made with the overall best interests of the league in mind and as such it provides for the National body to support and strengthen the decisions of its members.

With CARHA Hockey being aware of such disciplinary action, this will help us continue to keep the game safe!
